ISW: Ukrainian Armed Forces recapture territory near Vovchansk

Ukrainian troops recaptured several positions northeast of Vovchansk, while Russian invaders advanced to the Siverskyi Donets-Donbas canal in the central part of Kalynivka (north of Chasiv Yar).

This is reported by ISW .

"Geo-location footage released on 20 June shows that Ukrainian forces have recently recaptured several positions northeast of Vovchansk and advanced along Soborna Street in the northern part of Vovchansk," the report says.

One Russian blogger claims that Russian troops struck Ukrainian positions along Gogol and Olesya Dosvitnyi streets in the centre of Vovchansk, but ISW found no evidence of Russian positions being strengthened in the area. Analysts suggest that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are holding their positions in the area, despite previous Russian statements.

The blogger also claims that Russian troops have seized two buildings on the territory of the Vovchansk Aggregate Plant. ISW found no visual evidence of this.

Another Russian blogger claimed that Russian troops were taking up positions approximately 300 metres from the Vovcha River in the area of Vovchansk. Yet another said that Russian forces had advanced up to 1.55 kilometres in the direction of the village of Tykhove (directly east of Vovchansk). The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces reported that Ukrainian troops had repelled Russian attacks in the area of Tykhy, confirming earlier Russian reports that Ukrainian forces had recaptured the village.

A spokesman for the Ukrainian Khortytsia group of troops, Lieutenant Colonel Nazar Voloshyn, said that Russian attacks in the area of Vovchansk had become less intense in the morning of 20 June.

Geolocation footage released on 19 June shows that Russians have advanced to the bank of the Siverskyi Donets-Donbas canal in the central part of Kalynivka (north of Chasiv Yar) in the area where the canal goes underground.

Analysts conclude that if Russian troops are able to take proper advantage of this offensive, they will be able to attack Chasiv Yar from the north and threaten Ukrainian positions in the city centre without having to cross the canal to enter the settlement. It is noted that Russian troops have not yet been able to cross the canal at the point where it passes above ground in the Kanal neighbourhood (east of Chasiv Yar).

Russian bloggers also report Russian successes in the area of the canal in Kalynivka. On 20 June, a representative of the Ukrainian Khortytsia military group, Lieutenant Colonel Nazar Voloshyn, noted that Russian troops had resumed infantry frontal attacks in the Chasiv Yar area after suffering heavy losses during unsuccessful mechanised offensives recently.

In addition, on 19 and 20 June, the occupiers continued their offensive in the Toretsk sector (southwest of Chasiv Yar and west of Horlivka), but had no confirmed successes.
