This year the mortality rate in Ukraine is three times higher than the birth rate

The mortality rate in Ukraine in the first half of 2024 was three times higher than the birth rate. 87 thousand 655 children were born (9% less than during the same period in 2023), while at the same time 250 thousand 872 deaths were recorded.

Opendatabot reports this.

Compared to the period before the full-scale war, the birth rate in Ukraine decreased by 1.5 times: 87 thousand 655 children versus 132 thousand 595 in 2021.

Most newborns were registered in Kyiv, Lviv and Dnipropetrovsk regions. Consistently few children are born in the front-line regions - in the Kherson (221 children) and Donetsk (702) regions. In the Luhansk region, not a single baby was registered for six months.

At the same time, for every one newborn there are three deaths. For comparison, in 2018-2020 there were two deaths per child.

So, over six months, 250 thousand 972 people died in Ukraine.

The most deaths were registered in the Dnipropetrovsk and Kharkov regions, as well as in Kyiv. The least number is in the frontline Kherson and Donetsk regions, as well as in the Chernivtsi region.
