Poland has delivered a batch of upgraded T-72 tanks to Ukraine

As of 2024, Poland retained approximately 111 T-72M1/T-72M1R tanks and about 172 PT-91 tanks. After the latest delivery, the Polish inventory was reduced, but the exact numbers are not officially disclosed.

According to the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine, within the framework of the "Armored Coalition," the Armed Forces of Ukraine received Soviet T-72 tanks of various types and versions from former Eastern Bloc countries. Poland initiated the coalition in March 2024.

This was reported on the Ministry of Defence’s website on February 27.

According to military analysts from Army Recognition, the provided armored vehicles compensate for tank losses on the battlefield. The number of transferred tanks is not specified; however, it’s assumed that the new batch may include around 60 units, with the possibility that the total number could be greater or less than expected. These tanks have already arrived at the front line, and according to sources, this quantity is expected to compensate for the Armed Forces of Ukraine’s T-72 losses for at least two months.

According to Army Recognition’s calculations, since 2022, Poland supplied Ukraine with over 280 T-72M and T-72M1 tanks, while the Czech Republic supplied less than 194 T-72s, including old T-72M1 models and modernized T-72 Avenger models. Additional T-72s were acquired from Bulgaria and supplied by the Czech Republic. Moreover, other European countries — the Netherlands, Denmark, and the USA — funded or facilitated the refurbishment and delivery of T-72 tanks, bringing the total number to over 540 units.
