A thunderstorm, hail, and gusty winds that raged in the Kyiv region on the evening of September 8 have put power lines out of service. The storm uprooted trees, tore down wires, and damaged three hundred transformer substations. Currently, efforts to restore electricity are underway, but more than 11,000 families in the Kyiv region remain without power.
A powerful storm that swept through the Kyiv region on the evening of September 8 left serious consequences in its wake. According to DTEK Kyiv Regional Electric Networks, the natural disaster caused widespread power outages across the region. The highest number of emergency outages was recorded in the Boryspil district, where, as of 1:00 PM on September 9, thousands of families are still without electricity.
At the moment, more than 11,000 subscribers are without power. Emergency crews, who worked through the night, have already restored electricity to over 48,000 households and repaired 39 lines of 6–10 kV. However, 7 more 10 kV lines still require repairs. The company states that work is being carried out around the clock to restore power as quickly as possible.
On the evening of September 8, severe weather hit the region with heavy rain, wind, hail, and lightning. As Boryspil residents write on social media, it was after a lightning strike that power suddenly went out in many areas. Due to heavy rainfall, roads turned into continuous streams of water, with cars literally "floating" through the streets.
At the peak of the emergency, the situation was even worse - more than 25,000 families were left without electricity at the same time. According to DTEK, the storm felled trees onto power lines, resulting in damage to 17 lines of 10 kV. Additionally, 6 medium-voltage lines and over 300 transformer substations were affected.
In the comments under DTEK’s official statements, Boryspil residents complain that they are still without power. Company representatives respond that the status of electricity supply can be checked on their website, and in case there is no information about a specific address, they advise writing in private messages for clarification. Energy workers emphasize the importance of adhering to safety rules and urge people not to approach broken wires if they are on the ground. Efforts to restore electricity in the Kyiv region are ongoing.
