NABU: Potential losses in the defence sector amount to 12.5 billion hryvnias

The potential size of losses from procurement and abuses in the defence sector amounts to about 12.5 billion hryvnias – this is the figure mentioned in criminal cases being investigated by detectives of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine.

This was stated by NABU Director Semen Kryvonos during a small talk with the head of the UP’s investigative journalism department, Mykhailo Tkach, at the international conference "Movement through resistance. How the anti-corruption system works."

"If we talk about the size of the losses, currently within just one unit that conducts pre-trial investigations regarding procurement or abuses in the defence sector, specifically the direction of the Ministry of Defence, the potential level of losses, that is, what’s being investigated, is about 12.5 billion hryvnias. This does not necessarily mean that they will be established or that this sum will be exact, but currently, if we sum up the size of losses in each criminal proceeding, we understand that at this stage, in the current portfolio, the potential size of the losses is such."

Kryvonos clarified that last year, NABU employees sent cases to court with an already established size of losses – about 400 million hryvnias.

The international conference "Movement through resistance. How the anti-corruption system works" is dedicated to the tenth anniversary of the establishment of the anti-corruption infrastructure in Ukraine.
