Over the past two months, the number of civilian casualties in Ukraine has risen sharply.

This is stated in the January report of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Last November there was relative calm. Then 111 Ukrainians were killed and 357 were injured.

In December, 112 Ukrainians died, but there was a sharp jump in the wounded - 499.
In January, the war already took lives of 158 Ukrainians, 483 were injured. Among those killed in January were 40 children (compared to 18 in November).

Experts note that this increased mainly due to the intensification of missile and drone attacks. It is noted that most cases occurred far from the frontline.

The majority of civilian casualties (71%) continue to occur in Ukrainian-controlled areas.

The number of civilian casualties in Russian-occupied territory has increased. Largely due to the shelling of Donetsk on December 21, which killed 25 people.

In general, the total losses among civilians exceeded the psychological mark of 30 thousand, of which 10,378 died.

It should be noted that in 2023, the number of civilian deaths was lower than in 2014 - 1944 people against 2084.
