The main “lobbyist” for Navalnyi’s murder was the head of the Investigative Committee, Oleksandr Bastrykin, who had a personal dislike for the politician since the time of Navalny’s investigation into him in 2012.

Subsequently, Bastrykin more than once confirmed his attitude towards Navalnyi with poems, which he published on the Internet under a pseudonym.

After Navalnyi’s arrest, Bastrykin sought Putin’s sanction to kill Navalnyi in the colony, eventually enlisting the support of the head of the Federal Penitentiary Service, Arkadiy Gostyev. The latter, according to media reports, agreed with Bastrykin, in particular, due to the numerous publications of Navalnyi’s posts during his imprisonment. At the same time, for the same reason, a criminal case was opened against Navalnyi’s lawyers.

As a result, in August 2023, Volodymyr Putin gave permission for the slow poisoning of Oleksiy Navalnyi as a “gift” for Bastrykin’s 70th birthday. According to the original plan, it was assumed that the politician would die from cardiovascular problems before the end of 2023, but death occurred only on February 16.

According to a Russian media source close to the deceased politician, he sent messages from the colony that, in his opinion, he was receiving some kind of poison.

According to the biochemist with whom the journalists spoke, if the information about the blood clot from which Navalnyi died is correct, we could be talking about any coagulant substance, which, given the lack of water in the colony and the torture regime of detention, inevitably led to thickening of the blood and, as a result death.
