The Tagesspiegel writes that in mid-May, Ukrainians were informed that they would have to leave their homes due to the status of Ukrainian refugees.

The publication says that at the beginning of the war in the Ore Mountains in Saxony, migrants from Ukraine were placed in apartments intended for persons subject to the law on asylum seekers.

However, Ukrainian refugees have a special legal status. They "are recipients of citizens’ benefits and are encouraged to find an apartment on the open housing market."

Most of the 5,500 Ukrainians settled in these apartments have found regular housing, but more than a thousand Ukrainian citizens still live in apartments, which, as the publication writes, “are urgently needed by refugees from other countries, who are prohibited by law from renting their own housing - unlike Ukrainians."

In mid-May, these Ukrainian citizens received written orders to vacate the apartments rented by the district by June 15.

According to the district administrator, "they will have to increase the pressure" on the approximately 1,000 remaining people.
