SBU detained a Russian agent: preparing to seize Vovchansk

“The security service detained a Russian informant who spied on the locations of the Ukrainian troops defending Vovchansk. The aggressor’s henchman tracked the exact time and directions of flights of attack helicopters of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, which cover the ground units of the Defence Forces from the air,” the report says.

The enemy was also interested in the combat positions of Ukrainian aerial reconnaissance and heavy artillery, which kept the invaders’ assault groups under fire control.

“The Russians needed the intelligence for new attempts to capture the city and further advance in the Kharkiv direction. To carry out the hostile task, the informant walked around the territory of Volchansk and nearby villages, where he recorded the geolocation of Ukrainian defenders,” the SSU added.

At the same time, he “in the dark” asked local residents for the information he needed during conversations on everyday topics.

Then he reported the information received to the Russian intelligence service by telephone. According to the counterintelligence of the Security Service, an ideological supporter of racism, who was remotely recruited by Russian military intelligence in 2023, has been detained.

“He joined active reconnaissance and explosive activities during the repeated enemy attack on the Kharkiv region,” the department added.

The attacker is in custody. He faces up to 8 years in prison.
