Nazar Voloshyn, spokesman for the Khortytsia operational group, said that Ukrainian positions near the Kanal neighbourhood in Chasiv Yar had been destroyed, so it was too dangerous to keep troops there.

"The positions of Ukrainian defenders were destroyed, and the presence of personnel there posed a threat to the lives of our soldiers," Voloshyn explained.

In mid-June, it became apparent that Russian forces in the Donetsk region were approaching Chasiv Yar, a town located on strategic heights, and Pokrovsk, a railway junction where the most intense fighting is currently taking place.

According to the spokesperson, Ukrainian Armed Forces units have withdrawn to better prepared and protected positions.

The enemy has left no buildings intact; after the bombardment and artillery shelling, it looks like a "lunar landscape", he added.
