On Thursday, January 9, during the "Ramstein" format meeting, the US will announce a new aid package for Ukraine worth approximately $500 million. It is expected to be the last from the Biden administration before the newly elected President Donald Trump takes office in the US.
This was reported by Voice of America’s journalist Carla Babb. She accompanies the head of the Pentagon, Lloyd Austin, in the press pool at the defence ministers’ meeting in Germany.
The new aid package will include weapons from the existing Pentagon stocks under the Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA) program.
Despite the White House’s promise to spend all funds allocated for PDA by the end of Biden’s term, the Pentagon notes that about $3.8 billion will remain unused. These funds will be at the disposal of the new US administration, which will decide how to use them.
Before the "Ramstein" meeting, the head of the Pentagon, Lloyd Austin, held talks with Ukraine’s Defence Minister, Rustem Umyerov. Tomorrow, January 9, Austin will lead the last meeting in the "Ramstein" format, attended by representatives from about 50 partner countries.
The 25th session of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group will be held on January 9. It will be chaired for the last time by the US Secretary of Defence, Lloyd Austin, before he leaves his position.
