According to data from the New York Times, the Department of Homeland Security has decided to suspend several programs that allowed migrants to temporarily settle in the United States.
One such program was Uniting for Ukraine, which provided Ukrainians the opportunity to enter the U.S. if they had financial sponsors. As of September 2023, over 150,000 Ukrainians have arrived through this program.
The new directive requires the immediate halt of issuing "final decisions" on applications submitted by migrants.
Apart from Ukraine, the intake of refugees from Cuba, Haiti, and Venezuela was also suspended.
