Cluster munitions M30 were used against the M1989 Koksan SPG, causing significant damage to the artillery and enemy crews.
On March 18, Ukrainian defence forces successfully destroyed three North Korean M1989 Koksan SPGs in the Kursk direction. Thanks to the coordinated actions of the 14th UAV Regiment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the enemy equipment was detected, after which a strike was delivered using the HIMARS system. Observers from Forbes revealed new details about the operation.
According to available information, in the Kursk region, one of the Ukrainian drones detected North Korean howitzers hidden behind trees and transmitted the coordinates to the artillery units. Fire was opened using HIMARS rocket artillery systems, which employ M30 cluster munitions. Exploding over the targets, the missile dispersed numerous submunitions, potentially causing significant damage to both the equipment and the crews.
"The strike could have seriously damaged or destroyed a significant portion of the M1989 units that North Korea supplied to Russia to replenish the losses of Russian artillery and other heavy equipment," the article states.
