In Mykolaiv, a man shot a passerby over a remark: the perpetrator was detained

On the morning of April 27, a shooting occurred in Mykolaiv. Near one of the city’s stores, a man shot his opponent following a remark, the injured person was taken by an ambulance, and the attacker fled the scene.

Law enforcement officers quickly identified the perpetrator and detained him. He is being prepared for a charge of attempted murder. Details were reported by the Main Directorate of the National Police in the Mykolaiv region.

"This morning, April 27, a report was received on the 102 hotline that near a store on Heroes of Ukraine Avenue in Mykolaiv, during a conflict, a man shot another man, presumably with a pistol," said the regional police.

Police Department No. 1 employees of the Mykolaiv District Police Department arrived at the scene. They found that the conflict between the two men began inside the store when the victim reprimanded the attacker for his indecent behavior in a public place and his state of intoxication.

When the men went outside, the intoxicated attacker pulled out a weapon, shot his opponent in the chest, and fled.

The injured man was taken by ambulance; the 26-year-old is in serious condition in the hospital.

"Police, after conducting a series of operational and search measures, including with the participation of criminal analysis specialists and using video surveillance recordings connected to the ’Safe City’ system, identified the perpetrator. He turned out to be a 38-year-old local resident. The man was detained by police under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine," police in the Mykolaiv region reported.

The mayor of Mykolaiv, Oleksandr Syenkevych, responded to the prompt work of the city’s law enforcement officers.

"Today, thanks to video surveillance cameras of the ’Safe City’ system, law enforcement officers promptly identified and detained the man who attempted murder on Heroes of Ukraine Avenue. The system works and helps respond promptly to threats. Thank you to the police for their work. We are making Mykolaiv safer together," he wrote.

Currently, investigators have initiated criminal proceedings regarding the shooting with preliminary qualification under Part 2 of Article 15, Part 2, Item 7 of Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine "Attempted Murder with Hooligan Motives." The article’s sanction provides for up to 15 years of imprisonment.

"In the near future, the suspect will be informed of charges related to the committed crime. The seized weapon, preliminarily a traumatic one, has been sent for the necessary expert examinations, based on which further procedural decisions will be made, including additional qualification of the detained person’s actions. Police are currently establishing how the weapon reached the figure. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing," the police summarized.
