For some time now, Ukraine’s light aircraft have been used to hunt down Russian reconnaissance UAVs. However, "retraining" them to also shoot down strike drones like the Shahed has not yet been successful for a number of reasons.
Nevertheless, Ukrainian specialists are not stopping and are looking for ways to use light aircraft in this important direction.
This was stated by the head of the press service of the Air Force Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Yuriy Ihnat, during a TV marathon.
According to him, Ukraine is constantly seeking means to strengthen its air defence system.
"The Defence Forces employ all methods of shooting down. As I have already mentioned, fighters, helicopters, mobile fire groups, electronic warfare, and the Drone Systems Forces are also increasing their capabilities in drone air defence. Many experts pay attention to light aviation. We have been using it for a long time. The Yak-52 successfully hunts when weather and visibility allow for reconnaissance UAVs," Ihnat noted.
The Air Force representative stated that currently, the use of light aviation to destroy "Shaheds" is impossible for a number of reasons.
"We should not hope or count that light aviation will do something, considering that the Shahed has increased the combat component to 90 kilograms, and also that a light aircraft cannot operate at night," he said.
However, according to Ihnat, the search for opportunities to use such aviation in repelling "Shahed" attacks continues.
