The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the draft law No. 13266 regarding the Military Ombudsman in the first reading. This was reported by the People’s Deputy of Ukraine, Yaroslav Zheleznyak.
The Ministry of Defence explained that the main goal of the draft law is the creation of an independent institution with real powers, transparent procedures, and effective mechanisms for responding to violations of the defenders’ rights.
The draft law was developed by experts from the Ministry of Defence in cooperation with the President’s Commissioner for the Protection of the Rights of Military Personnel, civil society, lawyers, and military personnel, and was submitted to parliament by the head of state as a priority.
The Ministry of Defence also emphasized that it is an effective mechanism for civilian control, which will contribute to increasing trust in the command and state, enhancing military justice, and strengthening morale and cohesion.
“All warriors must know whom to contact in case of a violation of their rights. And most importantly, there will definitely be a response! That is why this institution must be strong, independent, and effective,” emphasized Defence Minister Rustem Umyerov.
