The Verkhovna Rada adopted the law on multiple citizenship in its entirety

On Wednesday, June 18, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine passed a law introducing the institution of multiple citizenship in Ukraine.

This was reported by the People’s Deputy from the "Holos" party, Yaroslav Zheleznyak.

According to him, the law was supported by 243 members of Parliament. All amendments were taken into account as proposed in the committee’s version.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the adoption of the law on multiple citizenship will facilitate the return of Ukrainians from abroad.

It also provides for the deprivation of Ukrainian citizenship to those who serve in the Russian army, as well as those who obtained a Russian passport, except in cases where it was done forcibly (however, as we have already written, for millions of Ukrainians who received Russian passports while living in occupied territories, it is unclear how to prove the "forced" nature of obtaining the passport).

Another reason is "creating a threat to the security and interests of Ukraine." This potentially means revoking the citizenship of those convicted of collaboration or treason.

Multiple citizenship is not permitted for those who obtained a passport from the following countries (excluding Russia): Belarus, Bolivia, Venezuela, Zimbabwe, Cuba, Nicaragua, North Korea, Syria, and Sudan. The reason is they voted against a UN General Assembly resolution in 2014 regarding the territorial integrity of Ukraine in connection with the annexation of Crimea.

A separate list of countries will also be approved, obtaining citizenship of which will also be a reason for deprivation of Ukrainian citizenship.
