The operation of the Defence Forces of Ukraine in the Glushkovsky district of the Kursk region has diverted Russian forces from several directions of combat operations in the east and south of our country. This involves about 60,000 Russian occupiers who were supposed to reinforce the losses of the aggressor’s units on Ukrainian territory in April this year.
This was stated by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, during a conversation with journalists. According to him, the Ukrainian Armed Forces currently control about 90 sq. km in the Glushkovsky district.
The Commander-in-Chief spoke about the significance of the first operation by the Defence Forces in the Kursk region for the situation on the Ukrainian front.
"You remember, at one time, our Kursk operation diverted almost 63,000 Russian military personnel, and together with the North Koreans, about 70,000. This allowed us to weaken the pressure of the enemy on the main directions and regroup the troops. The capture of Pokrovsk by the enemy, planned for September 2024, has not yet occurred thanks to the Kursk operation," emphasized Syrskyi.
The Ukrainian warriors managed to disrupt the aggressor’s plans once again in the spring of 2025, activating in the Glushkovsky district.
"In April 2025, Russian units - numbering, I repeat, about 60,000 people (including two air assault divisions, air assault brigades, marine brigades) - received orders to relocate to new combat directions and strengthen the offensive groups of the Russian army on the Pokrovsk, Toretsk, Lyman, Zaporizhzhya, and Kherson directions to increase the tempo of the enemy’s offensive. However, our active actions in the Glushkovsky district of the Kursk region of the Russian Federation disrupted these plans. As a result, these units were not redeployed to other directions. One of the brigades, which was already moving towards the Pokrovsk direction, was returned back to the Kursk direction," said the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Currently, according to his words, a Russian group of about 10,000 personnel is fighting against Ukrainian warriors in the Glushkovsky district. Overall, the active involvement in battles on Ukrainian territory of a significantly larger number of occupiers has been prevented.

"The Russian command changed the task for a group totaling about 50,000 people. Two airborne divisions, four more main brigades of the Russian Armed Forces, the 177th Marine Regiment of the Caspian Flotilla, and some other units are still concentrated in the North Slobozhansk direction. The enemy is conducting offensive actions there, which are currently stopped at the line of Kindratovka, Andriivka, Yablunivka, Yunakivka, and further this line extends to the state border and partially crosses into the territory of the Russian Federation. The situation there is stabilized. During this time, we have repelled and regained control of Andriyivka, and in Yunakivka, we have advanced from 200 to 700 meters within a week," described the situation, Syrskyi.
The Ukrainian group in this direction is commanded by the commander of the Air Assault Forces, Brigadier General Oleh Apostol, who, according to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, is doing so "quite successfully."
"We control about 90 square kilometers of the territory of the Glushkovsky district of the Kursk region of the Russian Federation, and these are our preemptive actions in response to a possible enemy offensive," Syrskyi concluded.
