The new language ombudsman proposed to remove the Russian language from the Constitution

The new language ombudsman Olena Ivanovska demanded the exclusion of the Russian language from the Constitution of Ukraine.

«It is necessary to eliminate symbolic inequality in the legislation — in particular, to abolish the special status of the Russian language, which in the context of Russian military aggression is not only a means of communication but also a tool of destabilization», she said in an interview with «Ukrinform».

In her opinion, «the constitutional model of language policy should correspond to the realities of war».

It should be noted that changes to the Constitution are not allowed during martial law.

Article 10 of the Constitution of Ukraine states that the state language is Ukrainian, but the state «guarantees the free development, use, and protection of Russian and other languages of national minorities».

Ivanovska also named «linguistic reintegration» of residents of the occupied territories as one of her tasks as an ombudsman.
