U.S. President Donald Trump, after talks with Vladimir Putin in Alaska, stated that the parties were able to make progress on resolving Russia’s war against Ukraine. At the same time, he emphasized that the final decision depends on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“There are quite a few points on which we agreed. There may be one or two really important issues, but I think they can be resolved. Now it all depends on President Zelenskyy. Although European countries should get involved, the main role is his,” Trump said in an interview with Fox News.
The American leader emphasized that he is ready to be present at the future meeting between Zelenskyy and Putin: “I didn’t even insist on my presence — that’s not the point. The main thing is that agreements are reached. And, in my opinion, we have a fairly high chance of success.”
Trump also stated that the parties are “quite close to an agreement,” but emphasized that Kyiv must give its consent: “Maybe they’ll say ‘no’.”
According to him, a trilateral meeting involving the U.S. could happen relatively soon, although he did not specify any exact dates. “Both Zelenskyy and Putin want me to be at their meeting. I will be there,” noted the U.S. president.
