Mathernova: Surrendering eastern Ukraine to the aggressor is an unacceptable dictate by Putin

This was stated on Facebook by the Head of the EU Delegation to Ukraine, Katarina Mathernova.

According to the observations of the EU Ambassador to Ukraine, during the meeting with Putin in Anchorage, U.S. President Donald Trump decided not to insist on a ceasefire, while Putin presented a so-called «peace proposal,» which is nothing other than the dictate of the aggressor: «For example, Ukraine is expected to surrender the eastern part of its territory—beyond what Putin has achieved militarily. Such a «peace» is unacceptable.»

According to her, the EU, on the contrary, has clearly and decisively stated from the very beginning that «peace must be based on the principles of international law—on full respect for the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Ukraine. No illusions, no compromises with aggressors.»

The EU Ambassador believes that there is no greater proof of the unequivocal support of Ukraine by the European Union than today’s visit of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Brussels, where he was welcomed by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. Another proof is the fact that «seven European leaders will accompany him tomorrow to Washington for a meeting with President Trump,» Mathernova stated.

«Their joint presence at the White House is a clear signal: Europe is united and determined with Ukraine. It will not tolerate a peace that is merely another word for capitulation. Together with the United States, we must push Putin toward a genuine ceasefire and then toward genuine peace—something that did not happen in Anchorage,» Mathernova emphasized.

She added that Ukraine can fully rely on its European partners.

«The EU has demonstrated a firm stance, courage, and wisdom. Because allowing the aggressor to dictate the terms of peace would mean putting peace in all of Europe at risk,» Mathernova believes.
