German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul emphasized that Ukraine must receive security guarantees that effectively approach NATO membership.
This was reported by Deutsche Welle.
During the German government’s Open Day, Johann Wadephul noted that Ukraine cannot be expected to seriously consider territorial concessions if it does not receive real security guarantees from as many countries as possible.
In the official’s opinion, such security guarantees could ultimately convince Vladimir Putin as well.
"This could become the foundation for restoring peace in Europe," the minister stated.
Wadephul warned that "a violation of security guarantees will be considered an attack on Ukraine."
Johann Wadephul stressed the need for a wide range of countries to provide Ukraine with security guarantees in the post-war period. This circle of guarantor countries should be expanded, for example, to include the United States.
The head of the German Foreign Ministry recalled that around 30 countries, including Japan, have expressed readiness to support Ukraine.
At the same time, he noted that a peace agreement with Russia must not turn into a "dictatorial peace" at Ukraine’s expense, and he called on Putin to stop the aggressive war against Ukraine and sit at the negotiating table. If Russia continues its aggression, he emphasized, the West will continue to resolutely support Ukraine.
