The State Security Service of Georgia (SSG) reported the detention of two Ukrainian citizens. According to the agency, 2.4 kg of RDX explosive was found at their disposal. The incident occurred on September 10 at the "Sarpi" checkpoint when a Mercedes-Benz truck with Ukrainian plates crossed the border.

In the service’s statement, it clarified that the explosive substance was transported from Ukraine through Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey. It was hidden in special caches. The agency noted that the driver of the vehicle is a Ukrainian citizen identified as M.S., while the other detainee, D.Z., received the RDX already in Georgia.

Investigation and Theories

During the searches, eight mobile phones, computers, data carriers, cash, SIM cards from foreign operators, and the drug cocaine were allegedly seized from the men. Criminal cases have been initiated against them for illegal possession and transportation of explosive substances and drugs.

Investigators are examining where exactly the seized RDX was intended to be used. Theories include preparing for a terrorist act in Georgia or transiting the explosives through the country to another destination. The SSG claims that the ultimate goal is yet to be determined.

Previous Cases

In February of last year, Georgian special services also reported the detention of a large consignment of explosives that arrived from Ukraine. At that time, it was stated that the cargo was attempted to be sent to Russia. The organizer was named as Andriy Sharashidze, a candidate for the Odesa City Council from the "Servant of the People" party in 2020.

Whether any suspects were detained back then is unknown. The SSG promised to disclose details soon, but no additional information was provided.
