Murder on the funicular: court sentences Artem Kosov to life imprisonment
The Shevchenkivskyi District Court of Kyiv has delivered a verdict to Artem Kosov, who was accused of murdering a teenager on a funicular. He was sentenced to life imprisonment.
This was reported from the scene by TSN correspondent Oleksandr Romanyuk.
On April 7 of last year, a former employee of the State Security Service, while intoxicated, started a conflict with a boy on the funicular and pushed him at the exit. Maksym Materukhin fell onto a piece of glass and sustained fatal injuries. Seven of the boy’s friends witnessed the incident.
Prosecutors demanded life imprisonment for Kosov for premeditated murder. The case was personally overseen by Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko. In court, Artem Kosov admitted his guilt and expressed remorse. He stated that he could not have imagined his actions would lead to such consequences. However, he disagreed that the murder was intentional.
The court sided with the prosecutors and sentenced the suspect to life imprisonment.
Oleksandr Romanyuk reported that Artem Kosov was immediately escorted out of the courtroom and did not speak to journalists.
There were many people in the courtroom — they applauded when they heard the verdict. Maksym’s parents said they are glad the suspect was punished in this way.
This court decision can still be appealed in the appellate court.
