Journalist, writer, and screenwriter Vitaliy Korotych has passed away.

This was reported on September 30 on Instagram by the founder of the publication "GORDON", journalist Dmytro Hordon.

"Today, at the age of 89, the outstanding Ukrainian poet, writer, and publicist, one of the fathers of perestroika and glasnost in the Soviet Union, long-time head of the editorial board of ’Gordon Boulevard,’ and my friend Vitaliy Korotych passed away. Any words beyond this are meaningless… May his memory be bright!" – he wrote.

Korotych was born in Kyiv on May 26, 1936. He served as an editor for various publications in Ukraine and Russia, writing in both languages.

In 1988, for his work at the all-Union magazine "Ogonyok" (under Korotych, the circulation grew from 1.5 million to 4.5 million copies), the American magazine World Press Review awarded him the title of "International Editor of the Year."

In August 1991, he remained in the USA when a coup began in Moscow, and until 1998, he taught at Boston University. He also wrote for the Moscow newspaper "Novy Vzglyad" and gave lectures in Australia, Mexico, and Canada.

In an interview with Gordon in 2004, Korotych said that he found both "stubborn dissidence" ("as if I’m banging my head against the wall, I’m against everything, I dislike everyone, especially the state") and "servility" ("Anything you wish. Here I am") unacceptable. "Both options are unacceptable for a normal person (at least for me)," – he asserted.
