The flood in Odesa claimed the lives of 10 people, including a child

In Odesa, as of the evening of October 1, 10 people are known to have died due to flooding caused by heavy rain.

This was reported by Deputy Prime Minister for Ukraine’s Recovery Oleksiy Kuleba on Telegram.

"Odesa. The city is experiencing severe consequences of a natural disaster. Already, 10 people, including a child, have died due to the bad weather," Kuleba noted.

He reminded that tomorrow a day of mourning has been declared in the city.

According to Kuleba, on Friday, October 3, he is preparing a report for the country’s leadership on the causes and consequences of the tragedy in Odesa. Proposals for state-level response will also be included: additional assistance to the victims and the adoption of personnel decisions.

Due to flooding, fallen trees, power outages, and damages, over 1,000 people have already sought assistance. Around 300 private homes and about 400 apartment buildings in the city have been damaged.

"Our primary task is to help every family, provide compensation, and support those who have suffered the most," the Deputy Prime Minister stated.

A temporary commission has already been established under the Odesa Regional State Administration to investigate the causes and circumstances of the tragedy. It will determine why the city’s warning system did not function properly. People did not receive information about the risks, and schools did not switch to remote learning.

"The families of the deceased and the affected will receive financial assistance. Compensation will be provided by the city and the region. A separate support program for people will be implemented," he said.

Kuleba noted that a hotline for the affected will be set up in Odesa. Anyone who has faced flooding or lost property will be able to seek help. Additionally, every family whose home has been destroyed or damaged must receive payments and assistance.

The official emphasized the need to resolve the issue of flooded shelters as soon as possible.
