Russia struck a humanitarian convoy in Kherson region: UN responds

Russian army war criminals in the Kherson region deliberately struck a UN humanitarian convoy. Two trucks of the UN World Food Programme, which were part of the convoy and carrying food and essential aid, were damaged; fortunately, no people were harmed.

This was reported by the Kherson Prosecutor’s Office, which documented yet another war crime by Russian invaders. For his part, the UN Humanitarian Aid System Coordinator Matthias Schmale clarified that this crime occurred on the road between Kherson and Bilozirka.

What happened

The Kherson Regional Prosecutor’s Office noted that the crime took place on the morning of October 14, 2025, at approximately 09:30. According to their data, at that time, Russian occupiers simultaneously dropped an explosive device from a UAV on a taxi in Kherson (injuring two civilians who were in the vehicle) and on two trucks of the UN representation in Ukraine.

"As a result of the strike, the vehicles were damaged and caught fire. According to preliminary information, there were no casualties among people," the prosecutor’s office reported.

Reaction of diplomats

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha emphasized that the UN humanitarian convoy was a deliberate target of Russian occupiers.

"The trucks carrying food for people in need were clearly marked with UN emblems. This is yet another horrific violation of international law, demonstrating Russia’s complete disregard for civilian lives and its international obligations," he stated.

Consequently, Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs once again called on UN member states to "strongly condemn yet another Russian attack on humanitarian workers and increase pressure on the aggressor state."

UN reaction

Interestingly, within UN structures, only the Humanitarian Aid System Coordinator Matthias Schmale clearly named the culprits – "the strike was deliberately carried out by the military of the Russian Federation." He also urged Russians to adhere to international humanitarian law and emphasized that "humanitarian workers and resources must not be targets."

In contrast, the Executive Director of the UN World Food Programme, Cindy McCain, for some reason did not name who was responsible for the "absolutely unacceptable" strike.

"This is absolutely unacceptable. A targeted drone strike hit two WFP trucks in Ukraine. No one was injured, but the trucks and the vital aid they were carrying were burned. Humanitarian workers, vehicles, and cargo are not targets. Never and nowhere," McCain stressed.

Thus, it is not surprising that many people consider the UN an "ineffective organization."

"Who destroyed these trucks? Can you name specifically, or will you continue to remain silent about the fact that your trucks were destroyed by Russia, which, by the way, somehow remains a member of the UN Security Council, despite illegally joining your ineffective organization," people noted in comments to Cindy McCain’s "reaction" to yet another crime by Russian occupiers.
