Blow to Eurointegration: Hungarian parliament officially banned the government from supporting Ukraine’s EU accession

The National Assembly of Hungary has adopted a resolution by an overwhelming majority, refusing to support Ukraine’s accession to the EU and further funding of its defense needs by EU countries.

This is reported by the Hungarian TV channel ATV.

142 parliamentarians voted for the proposal, 28 against, 4 abstained.

The resolution states that Hungary is against Ukraine’s EU accession due to the war and the country’s "non-compliance" with membership criteria.

The parliament calls on the government not to support the start of accession negotiations for Ukraine to the EU.

In addition, the document contains a call to refrain from sending funds and weapons to Ukraine, as well as to block the redirection of European funds allegedly allocated to Hungary for Kyiv’s needs.

The authors of the resolution claim that Ukraine’s share of funding in the next seven-year EU budget could reach over 360 billion euros, including at the expense of reducing agricultural subsidies.

It also mentions Ukraine’s recovery plan, which, according to the authors’ estimates, will allegedly cost each Hungarian family about 1.4 million forints (3.6 thousand euros).

The resolution welcomes the government’s initiative to conduct a public survey on further funding for Ukraine in the form of a national petition.

The document calls on the government to take all measures to end the EU’s policy of supporting Ukraine in the war, as well as "involving Hungary and the EU in the Russian-Ukrainian war."
