Aston Martin instead of a bank: HACC candidate Roik bought a supercar for 345 thousand dollars as "insurance against war"
Candidate for the position of judge of the High Anti-Corruption Court Olena Roik purchased an Aston Martin worth $345,000 last year.
In response to the question of whether she considers a car worth 14 million UAH a luxury item, she said she perceives it as an investment. Roik noted that she bought the luxury car with her own cash savings and a borrowed $100,000. She explained this by her desire to convert savings into an asset that, in case of physical destruction or theft, would allow her to receive the full amount from the insurance company.
According to her, the car is not in use, so, in Roik’s opinion, its market value does not decrease. When asked why she doesn’t keep her savings in banks, she replied that she doesn’t trust them.
This is not the only unusual financial transaction of the candidate. In 2019, she purchased 3.2 bitcoins for cash, and sold them two years later. She received the income from the sale ($155,000) to a crypto wallet and later withdrew it in cash. However, she could not provide any confirmations because she lost access to the Russian email service.
In 2021, the candidate issued an interest-free loan of almost 3 million UAH to an acquaintance. She also provided $100,000 to another friend. She added that she does not display ostentatious luxury publicly and is quite restrained. She said that, on the contrary, if appointed as a HACC judge, she «needs nothing more» and «has a lot of everything».
