Returning empty-handed: US and Iran failed to reach an agreement, - Vance

US Vice President JD Vance announced that talks with Iran in Pakistan did not result in an agreement to end the war. In particular, Tehran is not yet ready to abandon its nuclear program.

This is reported by  CNN.

At a press conference in Islamabad, Vance stated that the US has been engaged in negotiations for 22 hours and held a series of constructive discussions. This is good news. But there is also bad news.

"The bad news is that we did not reach an agreement. And I believe this is much worse for Iran than for the US. Therefore we are returning to the United States without any deal," the official emphasized.

He clarified that the US does not yet see Iran’s readiness to abandon the potential to create nuclear weapons, and this is what is blocking the talks.

"It’s about whether the Iranians demonstrate a fundamental commitment not to develop nuclear weapons not only now or in two years, but in the long term? We don’t see such commitment yet, but we hope to achieve it," Vance explained.

The vice president emphasized that Iranian officials rejected the proposed agreement terms, which, according to him, were "quite flexible."

"We are leaving this place with a simple proposal – the best and final way to reach an understanding. We’ll see if the Iranians agree to it," he said.

Vance also said that US President Donald Trump instructed the American delegation to come to the talks with good intentions and make every effort to conclude an agreement. According to him, they followed these instructions, but no progress was made.

Additionally, the vice president noted that he was constantly consulting with Trump during the trilateral talks with Iran in Pakistan and maintained contact with other administration representatives.

"Of course, we were constantly communicating with the president. I can’t say exactly how many times – six, twelve in the last 22 hours," he shared with journalists.

We add that on the eve of Vance’s conference, Iranian Foreign Ministry representative Esmail Baghaei named the key topics of the Iran-US talks.

According to him, the main issues were: Strait of Hormuz, nuclear program, military reparations, lifting of sanctions, and complete cessation of the war against Iran and in the region.
