Uranium and the Strait of Hormuz: key disagreements in US-Iran talks have become known
The main disagreements in the negotiations between Iran and the US boiled down to Tehran’s demands to continue controlling the Strait of Hormuz, as well as reluctance to give up stocks of enriched uranium.
A source from the Axios publication familiar with the course of the negotiations reported this.
The parties held several rounds of meetings in different formats, and the negotiations themselves lasted almost a day — from Saturday to early Sunday morning. Immediately after a four-minute press conference, Vance left Islamabad and headed to Washington.
According to sources, no final agreement was expected, however, the US side hoped at least «to preserve the dynamics of negotiations» and to continue the ceasefire regime.
The deadlock in negotiations threatens the two-week truce and increases the risk of resumption and escalation of hostilities, Axios emphasizes.
At the same time, the publication notes that the US has not announced its withdrawal from the negotiations.
