One missile instead of four: Ukraine forced to ration scarce Patriot missiles due to intense RF attacks
Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Committee on National Security, Defence and Intelligence Yehor Chernyev reported that the Armed Forces of Ukraine are forced to rationally use missiles for Patriot systems.
This information was published in a publication by Business Insider.
New Patriot usage strategy
Ukrainian defenders are departing from the traditional air defense doctrine when operating Patriot systems.
According to the unit commander, crews are increasingly limiting themselves to one missile instead of the standard launch of 2–4 interceptor missiles per target.
This is due to ammunition shortages and the need to conserve resources.
Reasons for changing tactics
According to Chernyev, Ukraine faces a shortage of interceptor missiles, requiring the most economical use of available stocks.
He noted that Ukrainian military personnel operate the Patriot system in semi-automatic mode, avoiding full reliance on automation to increase the effectiveness of each launch.
Limited supplies and high cost
The MIM-104 Patriot system is the most advanced in Ukraine’s air defense. Interceptor missiles, including PAC-3, cost approximately 4 million dollars each.
Amid constant attacks and limited supplies, even one additional launch is considered a significant burden on resources.
Scale of the threat and need for replenishment
Russian strikes often involve hundreds of missiles and drones, increasing the load on Ukrainian air defense.
Missed targets destroy infrastructure and civilian facilities. Kyiv constantly urges partners to increase missile supplies, but global demand for them remains high.
Ukraine’s lessons for NATO
Ukraine’s experience is being analyzed by partners. NATO emphasizes mobility, camouflage of battery positions, and sufficient interceptor stockpiles.
Chernev stressed that during a major conflict, Alliance countries may also face the need to conserve resources and adapt protocols.
