Strong position or nothing: head of SAPO explained the delay with suspicion for Yermak by the need for ironclad evidence
Claims that this requires a maximally argued position backed by evidence.
The heads of NABU and SAPO warned the president about a prepared suspicion notice regarding the current ex-head of the OP Andriy Yermak. Later, sources clarified that it concerns his interest in one of the houses of the "Dynasty" cooperative in Kozyn, through which the ex-minister Oleksiy Chernyshov had previously received a suspicion notice. Investigators in the "Midas" case established that money obtained as kickbacks from Energoatom’s contractors was invested in its construction. More than four months have passed, but the situation has not budged.
Today, in a comment to UP, SAPO head Oleksandr Klymenko explained the absence of the suspicion notice, noting that the prosecutor’s office does not announce procedural actions in order not to undermine the presumption of innocence. He emphasized that the prosecution’s position for serving a suspicion notice must be maximally justified and supported by evidence, and public opinion has nothing to do with it.
"95% of the searches we conduct do not end with them (suspicions — ed.). In cases of this category, the position must be maximally argued and supported by the maximum number of pieces of evidence, — explains Klymenko. — We cannot enter the process with a weak position; we are obliged to start it only with a strong one."
He added that SAPO will not violate the law or undermine its independence.
"We cannot ignore the laws and then lose cases because of this," — emphasized Klymenko.
