Ukrainian aerial reconnaissance complicates Russian offensive operations in the Lyman direction. Russian troops advanced to the eastern edge of Chasiv Yar due to increased mechanized attack.

Operation No. 1 - Luhansk region

On 4 April, positional fighting continued on the Kupyansk-Svatovo-Kreminna line, but there were no confirmed changes in the front line in this area.

Positional fighting continued :

  • west of Svatove in the area of Andriivka;
  • west of Kreminna in the area of Yampolivka and Terny;

Operation No. 2 - Donetsk region

On April 4, Russian troops carried out a heavily reinforced mechanized assault in the direction of Chasiv Yar (west of Bakhmut) and advanced to the eastern outskirts of the village.

Geolocation videos published on 4 April show Russian troops conducting an intensified mechanised attack on Chasiv Yar. The Russian mechanised column advanced along the T-0506 (Khromove-Chasiv Yar) road to the eastern edge of the Kanal neighbourhood (the easternmost part of Chasiv Yar) before Ukrainian forces prevented the Russian forces from advancing further into Chasiv Yar.

Russian forces are now increasing the pace and scale of their mechanised offensives across eastern Ukraine and may be increasing the overall pace of their offensive operations in Ukraine.

According to ISW, the Russian military is currently prioritising offensive operations on the Avdiivka, Bakhmut and Lyman directions.

Positional fighting continued:

On April 4, positional battles continued west of Avdiivka.

Russian military bloggers claimed that Russian troops had advanced to a depth of 830 metres southeast of Umanske (west of Avdiivka) and to a depth of 600 metres in the area of Semenivka (west of Avdiivka). On 3 and 4 April, Ukrainian forces also conducted several counterattacks in the area of Tonenke (west of Avdiivka), Umanske, Vodyane (west of Avdiivka) and Pervomaiske.

Positional fighting took place:

  • west of Avdiivka in the area of Yasnobrodivka;
  • south-west of Avdiivka in the area of Nevelske.

A representative of the Ukrainian brigade operating in the Avdiivka sector stated that Russian forces are trying to advance in the area as long as weather conditions allow, likely referring to ground conditions that will become less favourable for mechanised manoeuvres and muddier with the onset of spring.
