In the Carpathian region, a law enforcement officer transported draft dodgers to Romania for $10,000

A criminal group that illegally transported conscripts to Romania for $10,000 was uncovered in the Carpathian region. Among those detained was a 31-year-old local law enforcement officer.

The State Bureau of Investigation and the Prosecutor’s Office reported this on August 9.

According to the investigation, the illegal scheme was organized by a 31-year-old local law enforcement officer who attracted two civilian residents of the Ivano-Frankivsk region to his "business". He was looking for people willing to get to Europe and offered them to cross the border for 10 thousand US dollars per person.

The law enforcement officer’s accomplices drove the men by car to the border line outside the checkpoints in Chernivtsi region, then they showed the "clients" how to cross into Romania on foot. At least three people were documented being transported across the border using this scheme.

The law enforcement officer and his two accomplices were reported as suspects in the illegal transportation of men of draft age across the border (Part 3 of Article 332 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). The article provides for a penalty of up to 9 years’ imprisonment with confiscation of property.

Preventive measures have already been chosen for two members of the group - detention, another accomplice has been declared wanted. During the searches, 20 thousand US dollars, unregistered weapons, ammunition, as well as two cars in which the draft dodgers were transported were seized from the detainees. The investigation is ongoing, the involvement of other people in the criminal scheme is being established.
