The Ministry of Defence of Canada has confirmed the transfer of NASAMS air defence systems
The Canadian Ministry of Defence has confirmed the transfer of the NASAMS air defence system to Ukraine. The system is already in Poland.
This was reported with reference to a statement by the Canadian Minister of Defence, Bill Blair.
"We have worked closely with American partners and the manufacturer Raytheon on assembling this system and delivering it," he noted.
According to Blair, the air defence system is currently in Poland and is expected to be transported across the border soon.
The minister also recalled that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had previously held a phone conversation with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, informing him of the imminent arrival of NASAMS.
"We are working with the Ukrainian side to deliver this system, purchased by Canada for Ukraine, as soon as possible. I hope to be able to share the details soon," teased the head of the Canadian defence department.
What is known about NASAMS
NASAMS is a Norwegian medium-range surface-to-air missile system. It was developed by the Norwegian company Norwegian Kongsberg and the American firm Raytheon.
The system was designed to replace the MIM-23 Hawk surface-to-air missile system, which was in service with the Norwegian Armed Forces.
NASAMS became the first ground-based system to use AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles and the first Western missile system with radar guidance.
