Norway will increase aid to Ukraine in 2025 to 2.7 billion dollars
After consultations with the opposition, the Norwegian government proposes to increase aid to Ukraine in 2025 to 30 billion Norwegian kroner ($2.7 billion) compared to 27 billion kroner this year.
This is reported by the broadcasting company NRK.
The Norwegian government and the opposition have different views on what support for Ukraine should be.
This year, Norway allocated 27 billion Norwegian kroner for support to Ukraine, but in the draft state budget for 2025, this amount was reduced to 15 billion Norwegian kroner.
The opposition believes this is insufficient and demands increased support. The Conservative Party of Norway has proposed allocating 45 billion Norwegian kroner next year.
Therefore, the government met with parliamentary leaders in the Storting on Tuesday to discuss further steps regarding support.
After the meeting, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre stated that the government proposes to increase the amount to at least 30 billion Norwegian kroner.
"The situation in Ukraine is more serious. We want Norway to be a clear and leading supporter of Ukraine’s struggle," he said.
In addition to military support for Ukraine, the government also wants these funds to be used to secure and increase electrical capacity and energy supply in Ukraine.
Now this proposal must be discussed within the party groups.
Støre himself is heading to Stockholm, where he will meet with the prime ministers of the Nordic and Baltic countries. The Prime Minister of Poland will also participate in the meeting.
"Support for Ukraine will be one of the topics at this meeting," he said.
Thus, the government agreed on a new meeting with the parties in the Storting to conclude an agreement on Norwegian support on Thursday afternoon.
Last year, Norway approved the "Nansen" program for 75 billion Norwegian kroner, which provides long-term support to Ukraine until 2027, ensuring 15 billion Norwegian kroner annually.
