A survey showed that Ukrainians consider the best guarantee of security
A sociological survey has shown that Ukrainians almost equally support two main strategies for ensuring the country’s security. These are the development of their own nuclear weapons and joining NATO.
This is confirmed by the results of a survey conducted by order of the "New Europe" Center. Specifically, about 31.3% of respondents consider the development of Ukrainian nuclear weapons as a reliable security guarantee, while 29.3% support joining NATO as an effective means of strengthening defense.
Other options received significantly less support. An alliance with the U.S. is considered effective by only 11.2% of those surveyed, and peacekeepers from the UN can ensure security for only 8.9% of respondents. As for European troops on the territory of Ukraine, this option garnered the fewest votes – only 6.4%.
It should be noted that Ukrainians also assess the realism of these options.
"In any case, there is a tendency towards achieving self-sufficiency – over the past few years, Ukrainians have mainly linked their main security hopes with the Armed Forces of Ukraine, followed by partnership opportunities. The almost equal figures regarding the development of Ukrainian nuclear weapons and NATO membership may indicate a struggle between two main approaches – between a sovereign approach to enhancing security and a belief in collective defense," sociologists noted.
