In Ukraine, 13 cases of the new metapneumovirus have been recorded

In Ukraine, 13 cases of metapneumovirus have already been officially recorded.

This was reported by infectious disease specialist, Doctor of Medical Sciences Olha Holubovska on her Facebook page.

Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) is an infection that affects the upper and lower respiratory tract. The most at risk are young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. It is transmitted by droplets, and symptoms may recur throughout life.

According to Golubovska, the disease usually occurs in a mild form (runny nose, cough), but in some cases can lead to severe complications, such as fulminant respiratory failure. This is more common in people with immunodeficiency or after a lung transplant.

The incubation period lasts from three to six days, and the overall duration of the illness is 7–10 days.

Metapneumovirus causes symptoms similar to a cold or mild flu:
- runny nose;
- cough;
- fever.

The disease usually progresses much more easily than the flu and rarely causes complications.

To prevent infection, the Center for Public Health advises adhering to basic rules:
- regularly wash hands with soap;
- avoid contact with sick individuals;
- cover your mouth with a tissue or elbow bend when coughing;
- ventilate rooms.

In addition, the Center for Public Health assures that the situation with metapneumovirus is routine and under control.
