Zelenskyy: Macron’s idea of European peacekeepers in Ukraine is taking shape

The initiative of French President Emmanuel Macron regarding the possibility of deploying European countries’ troops in Ukraine to prevent new aggression from Russia cannot be the sole security guarantee. Many questions remain open.

This is reported in an interview with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy by Associated Press.

According to the head of the Ukrainian state, the proposal from Paris to deploy European forces in Ukraine to deter Russian aggression "is taking shape."

However, Zelenskyy also expressed some skepticism about this idea as a security guarantee from the countries of the so-called West, noting that many questions remain regarding the command-administrative structure, the number of troops, and their positions.

The President of Ukraine revealed that his French and American counterparts, Emmanuel Macron and Donald Trump, raised this issue.

"I said in the presence of the two leaders that we are interested in this as part of the security guarantee, but not as the sole security guarantee," he said.

The Ukrainian president emphasized that "this is not enough."

"Imagine there is a contingent. The question is, who is in charge? Who governs? What will they do if there are Russian strikes? Missiles, an assault, an attack from the sea, a land border crossing, an offensive. What will they do? What are their powers?" Zelenskyy expressed.

When asked by journalists whether he had posed these questions directly to Macron, Zelenskyy noted that they are still "in the process of this dialogue."
