NABU exposed 14 MPs for lying in declarations: criminal proceedings have been initiated
In 2024, 14 members of parliament submitted income declarations with false information. Overall, 34 officials and high-ranking officials committed this offense – regional-level deputies, judges, law enforcement officers, military officials.
This was reported by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU). It is noted that based on the respective conclusions of the National Agency on Corruption Prevention, NABU and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office initiated 22 criminal proceedings. Some declarants were served with suspicions.
Overall, to enhance transparency and accountability of the government (especially during wartime), obligatory declaration of assets by officials was reinstated in Ukraine in 2022. As of the end of December 2024, Ukrainian law enforcement agencies opened 70 cases related to false declarations, and 35 individuals were served with suspicions for such violations, including:
- 14 members of the Ukrainian parliament;
- 7 regional council deputies;
- 5 judges;
- 3 law enforcement officers;
- 3 state enterprise managers;
- 2 military officials;
- the head of a central government body.
Attitude of Ukrainians towards corruption
According to the results of a survey by the "Center for Social and Marketing Research "SOCIS" for February 2025, Ukrainians consider corruption the biggest problem of the country. Moreover, the vast majority of citizens believe that the level of corruption in Ukraine has increased over the past 2-3 years and blame this on representatives of anti-corruption bodies (NABU, SAPO, NACP).
Overall, 58.8% of citizens named corruption as the main problem – significantly more than other response options, even missile attacks on energy facilities and the occupation of the country’s territories by Russia. Meanwhile, 20.7% of survey participants especially highlight everyday corruption, such as bribes for access to basic public goods or services (e.g., medical care, education, police).
At the same time, according to Ukrainians, the government in general is to blame for the high level of corruption in the country – 57.4% of survey participants stated this. Meanwhile:
- anti-corruption bodies (NABU, SAPO, NACP) are blamed by 39.3%;
- the president – 35.6%;
- society itself – 31.6%;
- the Verkhovna Rada – 30.2%;
- the government – 24.9%.
