Ukraine agreed to a ceasefire to demonstrate Putin’s unwillingness to end the war, - Zelenskyy

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Kyiv agreed to a ceasefire to show, particularly to the countries of the Global South, that it is Russia that is not interested in ending the war.

«In the Middle East, I was often told that Putin is allegedly ready for an unconditional ceasefire, but Ukraine is not. Russian propaganda was quite effective there. That’s why we took this step so everyone would understand: Ukraine is ready for a truce, but Putin is not», Zelenskyy explained.

It is worth noting that the president previously opposed such a step. However, he agreed to a 30-day ceasefire after tense negotiations in Washington and the suspension of American military aid. In exchange for this, the United States resumed the supply of weapons and the provision of intelligence data.
