In the government, it was explained how the law on multiple citizenship will function

The draft law No. 11469 on multiple citizenship in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine has currently been adopted as a basis. The Ministry of National Unity emphasized that our country needs the implementation of this institution because it is aimed at restoring and maintaining the connection with Ukrainians around the world.

This is also one of the tools that will help ensure the nation’s future. This was stated by the Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine – Minister of National Unity of Ukraine Oleksiy Chernyshov on Facebook.

He published an infographic explaining what the draft law No. 11469 provides, which regulates the issue of multiple citizenship.

For Ukrainian citizens, the new law provides legalization in the event of having foreign citizenship, as well as the official right to obtain foreign citizenship without renouncing Ukrainian citizenship.

However, if a Ukrainian citizen has another passport, in Ukraine, they are recognized only as a Ukrainian citizen.

For foreigners, the law provides the opportunity to obtain Ukrainian citizenship by ethnic origin through a simplified procedure. The main provisions also include the right to obtain Ukrainian citizenship through a new procedure. Additionally, foreigners can obtain Ukrainian citizenship without renouncing theirs (except for the citizenship of an aggressor country).

Foreigners can acquire Ukrainian citizenship through a simplified procedure if they have served in the Ukrainian army or if they are persecuted for political reasons in their country.

The ministry also debunked a number of myths about the draft law. It does not abolish the requirements for knowledge of the Ukrainian language, history, and the Constitution. Multiple citizenship will be allowed under clearly defined rules – in particular, the list of countries will be limited and controlled, taking into account Ukraine’s security and interests.

For public officials and judges, multiple citizenship remains prohibited. The law also does not change the current land legislation.
