Russia is militarizing the Arctic under the guise of scientific research, – DIU

The terrorist state Russia is increasing its military presence in the Arctic and preparing a platform for resource expansion in the region. In the context of global warming, Moscow is trying to improve its strategic capabilities, particularly through the use of mineral reserves and the Northern Sea Route.

This indicates Russia’s attempts to secure its economic and military-technical presence in the Arctic under the guise of "scientific activity." This was reported by a representative of the Defence Intelligence of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine, Andriy Chernyak.

According to him, a key instrument for implementing Russia’s Arctic strategy is the state enterprise "Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute." The Defence Intelligence of Ukraine explained that formally this structure performs "scientific tasks." However, in reality, the organization is part of Russia’s resource-military project.

Under the cover of "scientific activity," Russians conduct geological exploration of new gas and oil fields in the Arctic, analyze ice conditions in the Northern Sea for laying shipping routes, and model climate change and oceanographic conditions up to 2035 for the purpose of long-term regional exploitation planning.

"The scientific expeditions organized by the institute study water temperature, current strength, wind dynamics, and also predict changes in ice cover. All this data has a dual purpose — both for civilian use and for planning military operations and fleet movements," reported the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine.

Additionally, in the Arctic, the aggressor state is developing infrastructure, installing communication equipment, particularly satellite communication systems, which can be used for coordinating Arctic operations of Russia’s Northern Fleet and supporting unmanned systems activities.

"The world must be prepared for the fact that the Kremlin’s next ’scientific initiatives’ are just a cover for a new phase of militarization of the Arctic. The aggressor state is gradually turning the region into a base for projecting power, controlling logistic routes, and accessing resources. If the international community continues to underestimate these processes, the North may become the next zone of tension," stated a representative of the Defence Intelligence of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine.
