The AFU control 90 square kilometers in the Kursk region, - Syrskyi
The operation of the Ukrainian Defence Forces in the Glushkivsky district of the Kursk region diverted Russian forces from several directions of hostilities in the east and south of our country. It involves about 60,000 Russian invaders who were supposed to replenish the losses of the aggressor’s units on the territory of Ukraine in April of this year.
This was stated by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, during a conversation with journalists. According to him, the Ukrainian Armed Forces currently control about 90 square kilometers in the Glushkivskyi district.
The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine explained the significance of the first operation of the Defence Forces in the Kursk region for the situation on the Ukrainian front.
"You remember that at one time our Kursk operation diverted nearly 63,000 Russian soldiers, and in total with the North Koreans - about 70,000. This allowed us to weaken the enemy’s pressure on the main directions, allowed us to regroup our forces. The taking of Pokrovsk, announced since September 2024, has not yet happened, partly thanks to our Kursk operation," emphasized Syrskyi.
For the second time, Ukrainian soldiers managed to thwart the aggressor’s plans in the spring of 2025, this time by activating in the Glushkivsky district.
"In April 2025, Russian units - which, I remind you, are about 60,000 people (including two airborne assault divisions, airborne assault brigades, marine brigades) - were tasked with moving to new directions of hostilities and replenishing the offensive groups of the Russian Armed Forces in the Pokrovsk, Toretsk, Lyman, Zaporizhzhya, and Kherson directions, thereby increasing the pace of the enemy’s offensive. But our active actions in the Glushkivskyi district of the Kursk region of the Russian Federation thwarted these plans. As a result, these units were not redeployed to other directions. One of the brigades, which was already moving in the Pokrovsk direction, was redirected back to the Kursk direction," said the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Currently, according to him, a Russian group of about 10,000 people is fighting against Ukrainian soldiers in the Glushkivsky district. In general, it was possible to prevent a significantly larger number of occupiers from actively engaging in battles on the territory of Ukraine.

"The Russian command has changed the tasks for a group totaling about 50,000 people. Two airborne divisions, four main brigades of the Russian Armed Forces, the 177th Marine Regiment of the Caspian Flotilla, and some other units are still concentrated in the North Slobozhansk direction. The enemy is conducting offensive operations there, which are currently stopped at the Kindrativka, Andriivka, Yablunivka, Yunakivka line, and further this line reaches the state border and partially extends into the territory of the Russian Federation. The situation has been stabilized there. During this time, we recaptured and regained control of Andriyivka, and in Yunakivka advanced from 200 to 700 meters within a week," Syrskyi outlined the situation.
The Ukrainian group in the direction is commanded by the Commander of the Airborne Assault Forces, Brigadier General Oleh Apostol, who, according to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, is "doing quite well."
"We control about 90 square kilometers of the territory of the Glushkivsky district of the Kursk region of the Russian Federation, and these are our precautionary actions in response to a possible enemy offensive," Syrskyi concluded.
