The strike on Kharkiv on July 23 was the first use of the Russian guided aerial bomb UMPB-5 against the city.

This was reported by the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office.

As a result of the attack, 33 people were injured.

What is UMPB-5

This is a modern high-precision guided aerial bomb, based on the Soviet FAB-250. It is launched from Su-34, Su-30, or Su-35 fighters. The warhead contains 250 kg of explosives.

Why is it dangerous

The bomb has a range of 90–120 km, allowing Russian aircraft to conduct strikes without entering the range of Ukrainian air defence. Due to the use of an outdated platform (FAB-250), such bombs often have low accuracy and hit civilian infrastructure.

The use of UMPB-5 means that the Russian Federation can now strike Kharkiv from a safe distance for its aviation, which significantly complicates the defence of the city.
