Ukraine and Poland have started joint exhumation works in Lviv
The joint Ukrainian-Polish expedition has commenced search and exhumation works on the site of the former cemetery in Zboishcha, Lviv.
This is reported by the Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine.
The works began on August 4 and are expected to continue until approximately the 30th of this month.
The expedition is aimed at the reburial of the remains of Polish Army soldiers who died in 1939 during the defence of Lviv against German forces.
The soldiers were of various nationalities, highlighting the multinational composition of the city’s defenders.
Deputy Minister of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine, Andriy Nadzhos, emphasized that the works became possible due to close bilateral cooperation between Ukraine and Poland.

"The memory of the victims of World War II is not just about the past, it is about our current values: dignity, mutual respect, and the ability to dialogue," emphasized Nadzhos.
According to Yevhen Boyko, the executive director of the Lviv City Council, the former cemetery in Zboishcha existed until the 1960s and was finally liquidated in 1987.
In the 1990s, a symbolic wooden cross with an inscription in Polish was erected on the site.
The search and exhumation works are being conducted within the framework of extensive bilateral cooperation aimed at understanding shared history and preserving the memory of the deceased.
