Ukraine’s national police have accused the head of a Kyiv energy supply company of stealing more than 67 million hryvnia ($1.7 million) from the state budget by apparently selling electricity to a department of the State Water Resources Agency at an inflated price.

The suspect, whose name has not been disclosed, may have illegally received tens of millions of hryvnia, Ukrainian police said .

The investigation found that at the beginning of 2022, the head of the company entered into contracts, according to which one of the departments of the State Water Resources Agency had to pay for electricity at a tariff twice the standard.

The suspect was charged seriously with “theft of property by abuse of official position.” Under martial law, such crimes are looked at especially strictly.

If the defendant is found guilty, he could be sentenced to imprisonment for up to 12 years.

In addition, authorities could ban him from holding certain positions and engaging in certain activities for up to three years, and they are considering confiscating his assets.
