NATO approves operational plan for expanding support to Ukraine
NATO defence ministers approved an “operational plan to expand support to Ukraine.” It includes a large role for the Alliance in supplying weapons and training to the Ukrainian military.
This was reported with reference to a press conference by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
"We have made significant progress on both fronts. On Ukraine, we have agreed a plan outlining how NATO will lead the coordination of assistance and training. This will allow NATO leaders to begin this work at the Washington Summit in July, putting our support for Ukraine on a stronger foundation for years to come", Stoltenberg said.
According to him, about 700 military personnel from NATO countries and partners will be involved in the implementation of the plan. NATO will oversee the training of Ukrainian armed forces at training bases in the Alliance countries, will provide support to Ukraine and coordinate the donation of equipment, and will contribute to the long-term development of the Ukrainian armed forces.
“These efforts are not a party to the conflict, but they will strengthen our support for Ukraine in asserting its right to self-defense,” the secretary general said.
