Trump did not rule out the possibility of reducing aid to Ukraine
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump suggested that he might reduce U.S. aid to Ukraine after returning to the White House on January 20.
Trump stated this in an interview with NBC News.
When asked directly by the journalist if Ukraine should prepare for reduced U.S. assistance once Trump returns to the White House, the Republican responded, "Probably. Sure" (Probably. Sure in the original).
It is worth noting that before the November elections, Trump criticized the Joe Biden administration for excessive spending on supporting Ukraine. However, he also criticized it for failing to stop the Russian-Ukrainian war.
After his victory, Trump has barely discussed what his administration’s policy towards the Russian-Ukrainian war might be, but he has repeatedly stated that the war needs to end.
When asked by the journalist about Trump’s promise to end the war between Russia and Ukraine within 24 hours or even before he officially becomes president, he replied, "I’m trying."
Trump also said that he has not spoken with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin since winning the election, but quickly clarified that he "hasn’t talked to him recently."
When asked further if he had spoken with the Russian leader after the election, Trump declined to answer, explaining that he did not want to undermine negotiations.
Trump also noted that the number of casualties on both sides of the conflict reaches hundreds of thousands of people, and that "this war should never have happened."
